Shoe rotation: 39% less injury risk — and why it isn't that simple
Runners who alternated between several pairs got injured noticeably less often. But there is only one study, it is more than ten years old, and it is observational. We unpack what you can take from it and what has been read into it.
The advice to “rotate your shoes” comes from every running page out there, and it sounds convincing: different shoes — different loading — less monotonous wear. What's curious is that this recommendation rests on essentially one study. It's a decent one, but it's worth knowing its limitations before you buy a third pair.
What the study showed
The paper was published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports (2015). It followed 264 runners over 22 weeks: 116 ran in a single pair, 148 alternated between several.
The headline result: those who alternated had a 39% lower risk of running-related injury — after adjusting for other factors.
The details that matter more than the number itself:
- The “single-pair” group ran 91% of their volume in their main shoes;
- The “multi-pair” group had 3.6 pairs on average, with the main pair accounting for around 58% of volume.
So this isn't about anything exotic. It's enough for your main shoes to stop being your only shoes — roughly half your volume in them, the rest spread around.
Why it might work
The mechanism is plausible, although this study didn't test it directly.
Every model sets its own loading pattern: stack height and drop change the angles at the ankle and knee, midsole stiffness changes the loading rate, and last shape changes how the foot works. Running always in one pair, you apply an almost structurally identical stress to the same tissues thousands of times in a row.
Running injuries are mostly cumulative: the structure that suffers is the one taking monotonous loading without enough recovery. Varying the pattern spreads that loading across different tissues — none of them takes on everything.
There's a prosaic side too: rotation gives the midsole time to recover its properties between runs and simply extends the life of each pair.
What the study does not prove
Honesty is needed here, because the “minus 39%” figure gets quoted far more confidently than it deserves.
The design is observational. Runners weren't randomly assigned to groups — they chose for themselves whether to rotate. And a person who has three pairs of shoes at home is statistically different from a person with one: more often more experienced, more often more attentive to gear, more often with more years of running and a considered plan. An observational study can't separate the contribution of the shoes from the contribution of the type of runner.
There is only one study. There have been almost no major attempts to replicate the result since. A single finding a decade old is a hypothesis with support behind it, not an established fact.
More than ten years have passed. In that time the market has changed radically: high stacks, carbon plates, and supercritical foams have arrived. Nobody has tested how “rotation” works in a world where one of the pairs is a plated racer.
Nobody tested what exactly should be rotated. Three pairs of the same model technically constitute a rotation, but they're unlikely to deliver variation in loading. The study counted pairs, not the differences between them.
How to apply it
- Two or three pairs is enough. The data doesn't support the idea that more is better. The order of magnitude from the study is around 3.6 pairs.
- Rotate meaningfully. The point is the difference: drop, stack, stiffness. Two identical pairs give you wear, not variety.
- Separate the roles. A soft, cushioned pair for easy and long runs, something more responsive for tempo work, and a racing pair kept separate and low-mileage.
- Don't treat it as a substitute for progression. Rotation doesn't cancel out gradual volume increases; a sharp jump in load will injure you in any shoes.
- Introduce a new pair gradually. A change in geometry is also a change in loading. Your first runs in an unfamiliar model should be short.
- Don't extend this to racing shoes automatically. Carbon-plated pairs have their own specifics, and the 2015 conclusions don't cover them — we have a separate article on that.
