Tips
  • Run the first 3–5 minutes deliberately slower than goal pace: let blood flow redistribute.
  • Drink on a schedule on the bike: running off the bike dehydrated is the most common mistake.
  • Shorten your stride and don't reach with the heel: wooden legs invite shin overload.

Why brick workouts matter

A brick chains the bike and the run with no break between them. The first kilometers off the bike feel alien: blood is shunted to cycling muscles, cadence is scrambled, pace perception is gone. The only way to teach your body to switch quickly is to train exactly that transition. One brick per week in the 8–10 weeks before a race visibly shrinks the jelly-legs effect.

The three workout variants

The classic brick builds base adaptation: a long zone 2–3 ride and a steady run after. Repeats (2–4 Γ— bike + run) pack more switches into one session and sharpen transitions β€” a favorite for short-course racing. The race simulation is a dress rehearsal at race intensity with full equipment and nutrition: schedule it 2–3 weeks before the start.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I do bricks?

Once a week is enough. More only makes sense in the final weeks before short-course races, where the transition decides more.

Why do my legs feel like jelly off the bike?

An hour-plus of pedaling shifts blood flow and muscle firing patterns: your quads are drained while tendons and feet have forgotten impact. Adaptation arrives after 4–6 consistent bricks.

Should I run after every long ride?

A useful habit β€” 10–15 minutes of easy running after the long ride: cheap in load, but consistent transition practice. A full run volume isn't needed that day.
